Part 4 in a 4-part series on the Vision-Alignment-Execution model of leadership.
“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” – Oprah Winfrey
In 2016, we get another chance to ask, “What do I want this year?” and “How will I make that happen?”
As a leader, setting an inspiring and galvanizing vision is your most critical role. If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed at the prospect of formulating, communicating and activating a vision, this is the perfect time to put the Vision-Alignment-Execution framework to work. Get ready to envision a winning 2016, empower your team to attain it, and create a rock-solid strategy that will activate your vision and bring big results.
To help you get started, we’re offering three practical tips to jump-start Your Best Year Yet!
Tip 1: Envision a Winning 2016
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, your business’s success starts with YOU. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali stressed the importance of seeing himself victorious long before the actual fight. He would actually spend time during the day visualizing his “win.” Take a moment and close your eyes. Imagine what you really want to accomplish in 2016 – envision what a “winning” year looks and feels like for you and the organization you lead. Once you write down your organization’s top three aspirational wins for 2016, you are three times more likely to attain them.
Tip 2: Determine How You and Your Organization Will Win in 2016
Once you have clarity on what a winning 2016 looks like for your organization, it’s time to determine how you’ll get there.
Begin by uncovering the “big” strategic questions and issues that you must consider – and take action on – in order to define a winning strategy.
During his most recent State of the Union Address, rather than present a laundry list of accomplishments and “to-do’s,” President Obama chose to frame America’s future by asking Four “Big” Questions. How we as a nation choose to approach these 4 questions will determine our future. What are the “big” questions you must ask and answer to “win” in 2016? Be thoughtful in your answers as they will determine your organization’s strategic path and its future.
Tip 3: Align and Empower Your Team…and Execute Your Plan
As your 2016 vision starts taking shape, and as you begin to tackle those tough strategic questions, your team will provide invaluable input and ideas. Their perspective matters, and their level of buy-in and commitment to “the plan” is the difference between attaining your goals and wondering what ‘went wrong.’ As the leader, your job is to create the space for them to contribute and also be open to their input.
Once the plan is solidified, it’s time to execute it. While it’s tempting to put all your goals in play at once, “boiling the ocean” won’t work. You’re much more likely to attain your 2016 vision by creating quarterly (and then monthly) milestones and facilitating quarterly “check-in” sessions to determine what’s working, what’s not and what’s next.
And just like that, you’re on your way to Your Best Year Yet!
